NATCHEZ ALUMNAE CHAPTER HISTORY
The Natchez Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was initiated by a group of 14 women. These women persevered and stood steadfast to organize a chapter in Natchez, Mississippi. Plans were made and meetings held far in advance of the actual establishment of a chapter. By November 19, 1977, a charter was secured and Soror Yvonne Kennedy, Director of the Southern Region, conducted the Initiation Ceremony.
The principle purpose and aims of the women were to establish, maintain, and encourage higher cultural, intellectual and moral standards among its members, for its own benefit, and for that of the larger society in which it exists.
Since the inception of this chapter, the organization has done much in keeping with the National organization’s Five – Point Programmatic Thrust.
Among these accomplishments are: Organizing a Delteen Club in 1978 for junior and senior high school girls, hosting Delteen pageants, making annual contributions to the Poor Children’s Christmas Tree and to local hospitals for the children’s wards, conducting Arts and Crafts workshops during the summer for disadvantaged children, collecting money door to door for the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation, providing Holiday Dinners for the Mental Health Activity Center, adopting senior citizens and contributing money, as well as food, during holidays, contributing to the local chapter of NAACP and Habitat for Humanity, staging door to door campaigns for Voter Registration, contributing to Haitians, tutoring local students in the three R’s, providing an American College Test Workshop and “Career Night Activities” for juniors and seniors, sponsoring Black History Programs, adopting families – donating clothing and giving financial assistance, providing a seminar on Health Care, providing a seminar for unwed mothers, providing holiday activities for children in the community (Easter Egg Hunts, Halloween Carnivals, Toys for Tot), conducting fundraising activities for scholarships, School America – Reading in the Mall during the Christmas season, Debutante Cotillion, Gospel Extravaganza held in conjunction with Black History Month, donations to the local “Stewpot”, donated books authored by Blacks to the city library, holiday fashion shows, providing assistance to locals in need, contributed hygiene packages to female patients in nursing homes and battered shelters, conducted “Blood Pressure” checks in the mall, and Sisterhood activities.
